My compositional methods tend to revolve around building generative systems: arpeggiators and other note generators feeding into layers of modulated instruments and effects. Accordingly, I kicked off by arpeggiating one of the FM synth presets. The arpeggiator doesn't have many built-in patterns, but each step has its own velocity and gate value. The FM synth itself isn't algorithm-based like the original Yamaha DX7, or Live's own Operator synth; instead there's a powerful (but terse and initially confusing) modulation matrix. The raw FM sound quality was characteristically metallic but had plenty of presence, and the sub-effect slots in Bitwig's devices allow instrument presets to contain their own effects chains, a facility which is exploited very nicely in some of the presets. The drawbar organ was an unexpected pleasure, being an instrument type I'd never really made use of in other DAWs. Again, the bundling of effects made some of the presets shine: one particularly mad preset placed an arpeggiator in front of the organ, and a note-triggered ladder filter downstream, generating some lovely rhythms. In general, the sound quality of the instruments is high: if I were forced to describe the sound, I'd say thick and rich, but perhaps a little lacking in character. (I'm not saying this is necessarily bad, given the diversity and power of the effects on offer.)
